I completed my Erasmus+ exchange in Slovenia at the University Medical Centre Maribor. During my placement, I worked in the cardiology ward, the pediatric intensive care unit, and the infectious diseases intensive care unit. This provided me with a valuable opportunity to become familiar with a different hospital environment and healthcare system. The beginning of my exchange was somewhat challenging, as adapting to a new culture and different ways of working took time. I also observed some practices that have been abandoned in Finland for decades. Nevertheless, the hospital staff welcomed me warmly, and most of them spoke English fluently. During my placement, I had the opportunity to participate in several procedures I had not previously observed or performed. Over the course of three months, I learned a great deal about both nursing and myself. During my placements, I also had the opportunity to get to know local students. Through them, I gained a deeper understanding of Slovenian culture and everyday life. At the same time, I made great friends, for which I am truly grateful.

The city of Maribor also left a strong impression on me. It was cozy and just the right size, and getting around by public transport was easy. Its location also made traveling to neighboring countries convenient. I was especially impressed by Slovenia’s stunning natural landscapes. During my exchange, I also had the opportunity to explore different parts of the country. I visited the Slovenian coast, Lake Bled, Kranjska Gora, and the Soča River, among other places. Although Slovenia is a small country, it offers an incredible variety of sights and experiences. My exchange experience was truly unforgettable, and Slovenia left a lasting impression on me. I will definitely return there in the future.
