It is estimated that one in twenty Europeans has been diagnosed with cancer. The disease not only affects the body, but also takes a heavy toll on mental health. Patients undergoing cancer treatment, as well as survivors, often face a number of psychological and cognitive challenges, such as anxiety, depression, fear, and uncertainty. These factors can significantly reduce the quality of life of patients, their families, and caregivers.

Unfortunately, psychological support is often unavailable due to unequal access to services and the stigma still associated with mental health. Many patients, especially those from less developed areas or socially disadvantaged backgrounds, do not receive adequate mental health screening or support.

The ALTHEA project researchers are working to address these challenges. Solutions exist. Systematic mental health screening enables patients to access psychological support in a timely manner. Early intervention is key. By recognizing warning signs early, healthcare professionals can intervene more quickly, prevent distress from worsening, and provide more tailored treatment.

The goal of the ALTHEA project is to provide high-quality, remote psychological support via digital platforms. By developing software that can be used on simple devices, we want to make the service accessible in remote areas and to individuals with limited access to advanced technology.

In addition to supporting patients, ALTHEA researchers will develop guidelines and best practices for oncology professionals and promote collaboration with mental health professionals. By integrating psychological support into all phases of cancer care, ALTHEA is setting a new standard for comprehensive oncology care.
