May 12th - International Nurses Day

12.05.2020

This year's International Nurses Day is held under the motto Nurses: A voice to lead - Nursing the World to Health.

May 12th is International Nurses Day. 200 years ago, on this day, in 1820, the British humanist and nurse Florence Nightingale was born, the initiator of raising awareness about educating nurses. She gave up a rich and comfortable life and decided to become a nurse, even though that was an infamous profession at the time. She worked as a nurse during the Crimean War (1854–1855), from where she reported to the world about the horrors of the war and drew attention to the need for adequate medical care, especially due to the disorderly hygienic conditions in hospitals. Later, she founded a school for nurses and midwives, making an important contribution to the reputation of this profession and laying the foundations for education in nursing.

Due to their unique role, they make an invaluable contribution to the health of people around the world, so it is high time that they become a resounding voice in health policy, on the occasion of the International Nurses' Day, the Nurses and midwives Association of Slovenia stated.

The International Council of Nurses (ICN) ICN also draws attention to the solidarity for all nurses around the world and a continuance for a common struggle for safe jobs and appropriate working conditions for all nursing staff.

Dear colleagues, we sincerely congratulate you on International Nurses Day and wish you safe and successful work in 2020, the Year of Nurses and Midwives!
